When we are mistreated, the wound can travel in three directions.
We can turn it inward, unconsciously harming ourselves by internalizing the mistreatment, eventually believing that we deserve it and continuing to live in avoidance and fear. Or we can turn it outward, unconsciously becoming like the person who hurt us and passing the wound on to others in an attempt to protect our wounded ego through revenge.
